Outage Supervisor - Altrad (Drax)

Job Overview

The Outage Supervisor supports the smooth operation of mechanical projects and repair activities within the thermal power plant. This role supervises a team of Advanced trades persons and apprentices, ensuring all work is delivered to high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency. The Outage Supervisor organises workloads, monitors progress, troubleshoots mechanical issues, and actively promotes a safe and productive working environment. The role also prepares performance reports and drives continuous improvement of plant mechanical systems and processes.

Main Duties

• Allocate and supervise daily outage inspection, and repair tasks for mechanical teams
• Monitor progress on outage and ensure adherence to work schedules and safety standards
• Guide, train, and support mechanical staff with technical instructions and safe working methods
• Diagnose mechanical faults and implement repairs to plant equipment, including turbines, boilers, pumps, and related systems
• Ensure all work is compliant with site health, safety, and environmental regulations
• Inspect mechanical equipment and plant areas regularly to confirm safety and operational fitness
• Report and record all incidents, near misses, and outage activities as required
• Communicate performance targets and expectations clearly to the team
• Maintain accurate attendance and work records for mechanical staff
• Collaborate with plant management to set outage objectives and priorities
• Help to develop, implement, and review mechanical outage procedures
• Recommend improvements to increase plant reliability, availability, and operational efficiency
• Prepare regular mechanical outage performance and incident reports
• Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and providing ongoing training for mechanical team members
• Address team concerns or conflicts promptly and seek management guidance when necessary
• Ensure full compliance with company policies and industry best practices

Essential Requirements

• Experience in supervising mechanical outages in a thermal power plant or similar heavy industry
• Strong leadership, organisational, and problem-solving abilities
• Proven ability to coach, direct, and motivate outage teams effectively
• Clear communication skills, both written and verbal
• Excellent knowledge of safe systems of work and mechanical safety procedures
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals
• Competence in using outage management systems and office software
• Understanding of plant procedures, statutory engineering regulations, and industry standards
• Ability to resolve technical and personnel issues in a professional manner
• Recognised mechanical engineering qualification (such as NVQ, HNC, or equivalent) required; further education or relevant certification preferred
• Physical ability to supervise and at times participate in mechanical work, including working at height and in confined spaces, if required
