Rigging Supervisor - Altrad (Drax)
Job Overview
The Rigging Supervisor leads all rigging operations on site within the thermal power sector to ensure the safe and efficient lifting, movement, and assembly of plant equipment, components, and materials. This role plans, organises, and oversees the work of rigging teams, inspects all rigging equipment, and ensures strict adherence to health and safety standards. The Rigging Supervisor collaborates closely with site management and engineering teams to allocate resources and maintain seamless project progress.
Main Duties
- Plan daily rigging activities based on programme requirements and maintenance schedules within the thermal power plant.
- Supervise rigging crews during the lifting, movement, and installation of turbines, boilers, generator components, and other heavy plant equipment.
- Inspect lifting equipment, slings, chains, and all rigging gear to verify safe working condition and legal compliance before use.
- Check all load calculations and ensure rigging and lifting plans are detailed, checked, and suitable for each operation.
- Issue clear instructions to rigging teams and confirm that safe working procedures are followed at all times.
- Monitor site safety conditions, recognise risks specific to the thermal power environment, and intervene as needed.
- Coach riggers and new starters in correct techniques and promote a culture of safety and best practice.
- Work closely with crane operators, engineers, site supervisors, and contractors to coordinate rigging requirements.
- Ensure all rigging activities comply fully with UK health and safety regulations, site rules, and industry standards.
- Complete and maintain lift plans, risk assessments, method statements, and daily rigging documentation to the required standard.
- Respond quickly and effectively to any incident or near miss involving rigging operations, lead initial investigations and document lessons learnt.
- Monitor and manage stock of rigging equipment and PPE, raising requests for replacement or repair as necessary.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Significant and recent experience in rigging within the thermal power sector or a comparable heavy industrial environment.
- Strong leadership skills with a proven record of supervising multidisciplinary rigging teams.
- Excellent knowledge of rigging processes, lifting equipment, and safety procedures relevant to power stations.
- Thorough understanding of UK health, safety, and environmental laws as they relate to lifting and plant movement.
- Ability to interpret complex lifting plans, technical drawings, and method statements.
- Effective written and verbal communication abilities, with good organisational skills.
- Relevant UK qualifications or certifications in rigging and lifting supervision (e.g., Advanced Rigger, Appointed Person or CPCS equivalent).
- Valid CCNSG Safety Passport
- Physically fit and prepared to carry out supervision, inspections, and support activities in challenging conditions and at heights.
- GCSEs or equivalent qualifications as a minimum; recognised technical training in rigging or similar field is preferred.
- Will pass all pre-employment medical, security, and skills assessments as required by site policy.
