Role Overview:
Join our team as a Health, Safety and Environment Officer at Heysham 2. In this role, you help create a safe and compliant work environment by applying company procedures and meeting legal standards. You monitor activities, provide expert advice, and support site teams in meeting health, safety, and environmental requirements.
The Health, Safety and Environment Officer conducts regular inspections and reports findings to leadership. You serve as a trusted advisor and communication point for site health, safety, environment, and quality matters. Your unbiased perspective helps drive continual improvement and compliance.
Candidates must be able to obtain CTC clearance or hold it already.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with health, safety, environment, quality and operations teams to review and address site needs, resolving issues promptly and effectively.
- Engage with internal and external customers to ensure understanding and implementation of all procedures and requirements.
- Support site compliance with procedures and legal obligations, including the development or review of risk assessments and method statements.
- Perform daily site inspections to confirm safe work practices, identify areas for improvement, and ensure that all workers follow current risk assessments and company procedures.
- Identify and help address training needs to keep all personnel operating safely.
- Complete comprehensive site audits twice per week.
- Log and track all actions from audits, inspections, and safety tours using the company reporting system; ensure unresolved items are escalated monthly.
- Support the delivery of critical training when authorised.
- Assist with incident and accident investigations as needed by company procedure.
- Take part in key client safety meetings and safety coordinator meetings to share updates and drive improvements.
- Carry out drug and alcohol testing as requested.
- Actively participate in the behavioural safety programme and coach site teams daily to reinforce safe behaviours and eliminate unsafe acts.
- Provide clear guidance and support for risk assessments and method statements, especially for high-risk or uncommon tasks.
Key Requirements:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain procedures and expectations clearly to different audiences.
- Practical knowledge of health and safety regulations and standards.
- Experience working with regulatory bodies, organising and hosting site visits.
- Relevant site experience in a similar position, preferably in the construction or nuclear sector.
- Basic understanding of Nuclear Site Licence Conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and investigative skills.
- Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, scaffolding, and coatings processes is desirable.
- Holds a NEBOSH General Certificate.
- Thorough knowledge of health, safety, environment, and quality legislation and UK industry standards.
- Holds or is willing to obtain a Safety Passport.
- Holds or is willing to undergo CTC clearance.
